Designing with the mountain, not against it
SMA's role is not simply to draw buildings. Its work translates Manang's climate, terrain, water, local materials, labour, and retreat needs into a buildable system. The architecture is intended to feel as though it belongs to the mountain rather than being placed on top of it.
Wind · Sun · Water · Materials
The campus uses terrain for shelter, winter sun for passive heat, gravity for water movement, thick stone for thermal mass, and local materials and craft wherever practical. These are not decorative sustainability features; they are basic conditions for making the retreat center workable at 3,397 metres.
A pilot before scale
The Grand Café gives the team a first complete construction cycle in which to test detailing, labour coordination, material handling, winter protection, and site management before repeating the lessons across retreat houses and larger buildings.
